Having studied Germany and the reasons for beginning WWII in Europe [in reality the Japanese started WWII in China based on the Mukden Incident in 1931] since the mid-1960s; and being a Vietnam veteran whose talked with hundreds of WWII GI's over the course of 5 decades; this is the single best book I've ever read on how the western world stood by and allowed WWII in Europe to happen! This isn't to detract from the national guilt of nearly all of the Nazi Germany citizens, or that of Hitler whom they put into power; one for instance is that of the SS Einsatzgruppen who followed the regular army in order to kill all of those on Himmler's death lists. Thus it's impossible to believe that the Germans who built 1500 Death Factories didn't know about the mass [12,000,000 plus] murders.The author, writing in 1934 beginning with the Hohenzollern royal line describes how Bismarck's tutelage of at least 4 [Crown Prince’s] leading up to WWI; along with a discussion of the name of the nation "Germany" which only ever existed on a map drawn up after the Franco/Prussian War. However this map of Germania [From Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars] became the name applied to a fictional nation that did not exist! While Bismarck was able to return to Prussia and her neighboring Deutschen Regionen allies, the other 30+ Deutschen Regionen were still as distant to Bismarck as they had been to Caesar. This is because of the topography of Deutschland which is covered with some of the highest mountains in Europe, several great rivers and flora which separated all of the other Regionen from Bismarck just as effectively as Germania was the stopping point of Caesar's hegemony into Europe.
There are two reasons generally given for why Hitler built the autobahn: to fight the depression and put people to work, but Hitler never did anything that didn't benefit Hitler and the freeway system was how he unified the Deutschen Regionen into Deutschland which was so nicely filmed by Leni Riefenstahl at the 1934 NSDAP Party Congress in 1934.
This is an excellent book for the serious student who is at least familiar with the Deutschen language.
